What Is ORCID and How To Register
ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier (an ORCID iD) that distinguishes you from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscripts, supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities, ensuring that your work is recognized. It is intended to be used by individual researches, as well as organizations which are involved in research, like universities, laboratories, and commercial research companies.
You can see a video instruction on how to register to ORCID here.
The registration process is very simple. Via the https://orcid.org/ URL you can access the official ORCID website and choose the SIGN IN option in the top right corner.
A window will open up and provide you with two options – sign in if you already have an account, or open a new one. To start the registration process click on REGISTER NOW.
The following window will require you to provide your data: first name, last name, email, and ORCID password. The password must be at least 8 characters long, and contain numbers and symbols.
Your ORCID iD is connected to your ORCID Record, which can be linked with your research activities, awards, and any material where your name occurs. In the privacy section you can change who can see the information in your ORICD Record by choosing the public, private, or limited options. You can also specify how often you wish to receive notifications to your email (it can be instantaneous, once a day, once a week, or you can turn it off). You need to check the section that asks you to prove that you are not a robot and agree to the terms and conditions of use. After you have finished, click on REGISTER.
After you have successfully registered, you will get a unique iD, which will show on left side of your screen. You can enter your biographical information, relating to your education, place of employment, as well as published works.
While entering your information, you will need to verify your email to fully unlock your ORCID account. After you have verified your email, you can continue entering your biographical information.
You can add your works manually, or import them from other systems, like Scopus and similar.
If you choose the Scopus to ORCID option, a window will open up where you need to check the Allow this permission until I revoke it option. This allows Scopus to access certain information from your ORCID Record. After you are done, click on Authorize.
After you have authorized Scopus, a window will open up containing publications with first and last names similar to yours. You need to find the publications authored by you, select them, and click on the NEXT button.
A new window will open, where you need to select your first and last name, and click NEXT.
In the third step you need to confirm that you are the author of the publication, or that a mistake may have happened during selecting the publication. After you have confirmed it, click NEXT.
The fourth step allows you to review the information related to the name of the publication and the authorship, i.e. to check whether the information is correct before it is sent to your ORCID Record. After you have finished reviewing, click NEXT.
In the fifth step you enter you email and click on SEND AUTHOR ID.
The sixth step enables you to send a list of your publications to your ORCID profile, where you need to select the Send my publication list option. As an alternative option, you can return to ORCID.
After you send the publication list a new window will open, allowing you to return by clicking on the return to ORCID option.
After returning, you can find the works you sent via the abovementioned method in the Works menu. You can sort the works by date, name, and type in the Sort menu. You can also change the privacy settings, i.e. choose who can see your works.
By clicking on the Account settings menu, at any time you can change the settings relating to your email, password, and language, or deactivate your account.
You can exit the account by clicking on SIGN OUT in the top right corner of the screen.
